Format For Writing a Book Report

When trying to make some money from the Internet, publishing a book or report online is one of the most profitable ventures you can undertake. There are many different approaches to writing a book or a report, and depending on the market that you want to target, you might be wondering about the best way to get started. First of all, you should consider what format your eBook will be in. Choose the wrong format for writing a book report and it could be a very costly mistake.

So, what are formats and what are the things you need to consider?

A format is basically two things:

1. The type of file your information will be stored in. On your computer are many different types of file, where each file type is typically opened by a different type of program. For example, there are plain text files, usually denoted with a ‘.txt’ extension, there are ‘.pdf’ files, which are opened with Adobe Reader, there are ‘.htm’ or ‘.html’ files, which can be opened by any web browser, and so on. There are many, many different types of formats that correspond to the myriad of text and word processing programs available.

2. How you layout your text within the file so that it (a) looks pleasing to the eye and (b) is easy to read. For example, one long block of text is not as attractive as short paragraphs with lots of white space and pictures.

So how do you get both formats right?

Firstly you should present your eBook in a format your target market can open. Sounds obvious, but many people might not have the software that you have. Formats such as .pdf, .txt, and .htm, will have almost universal readability. As will .doc which is opened with Microsoft Word.

However, you need to consider more than just readability when you make this decision. You should also consider piracy and copyright infringement. If your book is truly brilliant, and boasts a title such as “How to make a million dollars in your sleep within 24 hours”, then you must realize that it will be a prime target for being reproduced and passed around illegally.

For this reason, you might want to consider making your work secure by using one of the many formats that will convert your text into a protected file, so that it can only be opened by a reader who has legitimately paid for the right to do so.

Secondly you need to present your work as attractively as you can. For no matter how brilliant the content of your book is, if the cover doesn’t instantly attract a reader, then all the good work you’ve done is lost. People will mistakenly assume that if you haven’t bothered with the presentation, then you won’t have made much of an effort with the contents either.

Finally, you need to make sure the inside of your book or report is easy on the eye. This means you need to display your text neatly, organise your work into logical chapters, include a table of contents, add page numbers, pictures and, for books on the Internet, hyperlinks and anchor text.
